The IJ's Marin Voice Today was co-authored by Kathleen Russell, a Marin political consultant and Megan Matson a Bolinas activist. Kathleen and Megan wrote about their support as women for Leno and Obama. For starters, as a political consultant, Kathleen should know not to confuse or dilute the message. They diluted it by advocating for two candidates instead of one. They should have picked either Leno or Obama.
We're also surprised the IJ ran it. Its usually considered bad form for a political consultant to be advocating for specific candidates publicly before an election. Its one thing for the IJ to run a Marin Voice written by political consultants giving their analysis of a particular race. Richard Rubin does this all the time. Or for a political consultant to defend a politician on a specific issue not around election time. Its another for a political consultant to be writing a persuasive piece in favor of one candidate when that candidates election is just around the corner.
The reason is the number one interest of a political consultant is clients who are running for office. Advocating publicly is usually bad form because the public doesn't know their motivations. Will Kathleen soon be on the payroll for Mark? Did Joe or Carole decide not to hire her and therefore she is supporting Mark? See what I mean? Political Consultants are best left to do their advocacy work behind the scenes and not in the public sphere such as the Marin Voice.
